UIL Solos Dear Parents, Although we are still early in the school year and solo and ensemble is still sometime away (February), we would like to take this opportunity to inform you of a major change regarding solos for your children. This year we are requiring students to purchase their own solo. How is this different than past years? In past years, we have allowed the students to use the extremely limited collection of solo works we have in the high school band library. Due to the growth of the program, changes to the Prescribed Music List (UIL approved solo list), and the limited nature of the pieces we do own, we feel it would be best for each student to have their own. In the past, sometimes one solo was being played by 5 or more students. This situation causes problems on the day of contest when we have to provide the judge with an original of the solo (no copies are allowed). With a limited library and so many students, this situation inevitably caused scheduling problems (one original solo having to be in two places at once for two different judges). Occasionally, the solo would become lost in the shuffle and the other students performing the solo later in the day wouldn't have an original to give to the judge. In some cases we've had to borrow from other schools in order to keep students from being disqualified! We feel the best solution to this issue would be to have our students own their own solo. Cost of most solos will fall in the $15 - $25 range. These solos could make great momentos for their years in band. There's also the possibility of selling the solo back to another student next year. Private lesson teachers will still be involved in helping their students select suitable repertiore for solo competition. For those that do not have private lesson teachers, Mr. Albin (woodwinds), Mr. Johnstone (brass), and Mr. Qualls (percussion) will still be available to provide guidance in this area. While the solos that we are able to show will be somewhat limited, we will be able to give students without private teachers the appropriate information so that they can order their solo. The best places are internet dealers. Some you may wish to bookmark are: www.jwpepper.com www.penders.com www.hickeys.com One of the objective grades your child will receive for the 3rd Six Weeks is a form submitted to Mr. Johnstone with all of the information regarding the solo he or she has chosen for solo competition and also a declaration of which contests he or she will be participating in - Aledo Invitational (held at AMS) or Region 7 UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest (Crowley High School). Again, this is some time away, but it was something we felt we needed to give plenty of advanced notice on. It is our suggestion that students select a solo soon and order the solo before December to insure that the music arrives in plenty of time. Please let us know if you have questions. Sincerely, Aledo Band Staff
